Seminar on Investigative Journalism and Social Responsibility

To celebrate the International Anti-Corruption Day on December 9th, the Norwegian Embassy will be organizing a seminar on the role of investigative journalism in combating corruption. The seminar will run over two days. The first day will be split into two parts. In the afternoon there will be a workshop aimed at teaching research techniques to journalists. Then, in the evening there will be an informal meeting with two Russian journalists at the Press Club Riga. The second day is devoted to a conference focused on a set of international cases ranging from the AirBaltic case to the FSB in Russia.

The program is as follows:

December 8th:

Part 1 – Workshop for journalists: "Research and Sources" 

Time: 14:00 – 17:30

Venue: University of Latvia, Faculty of Social Sciences, 1a Lomonosova Street, Riga

Participants: journalists Siri Gedde-Dahl (Norway) and Heine Jorgensen (Denmark). Valdis Krebs (USA), expert on network analysis and network weaving.

Part 2 – Informal meeting with the authors of the book “The New Nobility. The Restoration of Russia’s Security State and the Enduring Legacy of KGB”.

 

Time: 19:00

Place: “Press club Riga”, creative space Satori, 84 Dzirnavu Street (Bergs Bazaar), Riga

Participants: journalists and authors Andrei Soldatov and Irina Borogan  (Russia)

December 9th:

Seminar: “Our Experiences”.

Five well-known journalists from different countries will tell their stories about the selected cases they have unveiled.

 

Time: 12:00 – 16:00

Place: Hotel “Tallink Hotel Riga”, 24 Elizabetes Street, Riga

Participants: Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Parliament of Latvia, journalists Siri Gedde-Dahl (Norway), Heine Jorgensen (Denmark), Andrej Soldatov and Irina Borogan (Russia), Bogusław Chrabota (Poland), and Sanita Jemberga (Latvia)

The working language of the seminar is English (with the exception of Mr. Valdis Krebs’ presentation). Translation service between English and Latvian will be provided on the 9th of December only.
